Lactation Team

Our Story of Silver Linings and Liquid Gold
Being sick is tough! Getting babies and toddlers back to their home routine and diets can be a real challenge when schedules have been disrupted, parents and patients are sleep deprived, and all are exhausted by the physically draining marathon of being sick and having to spend time in a hospital.

That's why we've taken steps to offer better support to families experiencing a hospital stay for their child's illness.  Our goal is to provide the best tools to keep sick babies latching successfully, maintain milk volume when they can't ,and minimize any gaps in nutrition for sick kids.  Our clinical nutrition department now offers specialized lactation support; allowing them to expand the nutrition cares they've always providing.  A few ways we can assist:
  • helping infants on breathing machines with tubes and wires stay close to parents through skin to skin contact (healing for baby, restorative for mom or dad!)
  • providing time and equipment to pump and store milk while baby is too sick to eat (first thought - get to the hospital, last thought - what will happen after that!).
  • Supporting best practices to maintain volume (we specialize in looking out for mom when baby is too sick to eat)
  • Improving latch and successful milk transfer for sick babies or parents facing challenges with painful latch symptoms (we can do evaluations and get families back to the community supports in place when the hospital stay is over)

Our lactation specialist team is working hard to help integrate national best practices for the care of our hospitalized babies and toddlers.

We provide families with evidenced based education and empower them to make informed choices about the health of their children.

We support mothers' goals and provide sensitive assessments, assistance, and resources to help them in their lactation journey.

Dayton Children's Lactation team has expanded to provide support not only in our NICU families, but also to all of our other inpatient units, Outpatient Lactation Clinic, and outpatients at Dayton Childrens Pediatrics at the Connor Child Health Pavillion.

Your donation would help to allow these services to flourish and reach as many families as possible!

Help support our team of IBCLC's, Dieticians, Nursing staff, Speech and Physical therapists, Physician and ENT specialists to make care and support available for all of our families.
