Canine Co-pilot Program:
Dayton Children's has more than 3,200 employees who come to work every day to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. There are three employees that are unlike the rest... they have fur and four paws! Millie, Peppermint, and Addie are full-time facility dogs who work alongside our Child Life team to provide individualized interventions that best meet a child's needs. Whether it's lending a paw during a tough procedure, addressing pain without the use of medication, or being present to help lower anxiety in an unfamiliar environment, the facility dogs and their handlers partner together to ensure the patient and family feel comfortable and supported during their visit.
About Addie:
Addie’s primary handler is Sydney, who is a Certified Child Life Specialist in the Medical Imaging Department and other outpatient areas at DCH’s South Campus. They work together to encourage patients to be brave for various procedures, including MRIs, CTs, blood draws, IVs, and much more! In the MRI department, Sydney and Addie play a key role in the STAR program. STAR stands for Soaring Towards Anxiety Reduction. This program focuses on utilizing preparation and support to help patients complete an MRI exam without sedation. Kids gets more excited to get their scan done, because they have Addie to show them the ropes!
Fun Facts about Addie:
1. Addie loves ice cubes and peanut butter more than any other treat.
2. Addie knows how to “whisper,” and it is her most highly requested trick to demonstrate.
3. Addie’s favorite pastime is swimming at the lake.
