Canine Copilot Program:
Dayton Children's has more than 3, 200 employees who come to work every day to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. There are three employees that are unlike the rest... they have fur and four paws! Millie, Peppermint, and Addie are full time facility dogs who work alongside our Child Life team to provide individualized interventions that best meet a child's needs. Whether it's lending a paw during a tough procedure, addressing pain without the use of medication, or being present to help lower anxiety in an unfamiliar environment, the facility dogs and their handlers partner together to ensure the patient and family feel comfortable and supported during their visit.
About Millie:
Millie’s primary handler and Mom is Meghan Budai who is a Certified Child Life Specialist in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. They work together to provide support to patients and their families during some of the most stressful and scary times. Whether it is helping explain a new diagnosis in child friendly and easy to understand terms, providing support and comfort during difficult procedures, or encouraging and helping the sickest kids meet their physical therapy goals, Millie and Meghan are there every step of the way. They strive to bring lots of smiles and laughs to patients, even on the toughest days when it doesn’t feel possible.
In addition to covering the PICU, they occasionally assist patients on the Hematology/Oncology Unit as well as providing support to patient’s experiencing a mental health crisis. Th
