Canine Copilot Program:
Dayton Children's has more than 3, 200 employees who come to work everyday to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. There are three employees that are unlike the rest... they have fur and four paws! Millie, Peppermint, and Addie are full time facility dogs who work alongside our Child Life team to provide individualized interventions that best meet a child's needs. Whether it's lending a paw during a tough procedure, addressing pain without the use of medication, or being present to help lower anxiety in an unfamiliar environment, the facility dogs and their handlers partner together to ensure the patient and family feel comfortable and supported during their visit.
About Peppermint:
Peppermint's primary handler and Mom is Kara Lucas who is a Certified Child Life Specialist in the Medical Imaging Department. They work together to encourage patients to be brave for various procedures including MRI's, CT's, blood draws, IV's, and much more! In the MRI department, Kara and Peppermint play a key role in the STAR program. STAR stands for Soaring Towards Anxiety Reduction. This program focuses on utilizing preparation and support to help patients complete an MRI exam without sedation. Kids get more excited to do their scan because they saw Peppermint do it!
Peppermint is very lucky to also have a FUN aunt! Her name is Elyse Schenker who is a Activity Therapist on the Behavioral Health Unit. Every Monday, Elyse and Peppermint team up to provide group lead interventions with patients who focus on improving their mental health.
Fun Facts about Peppermint:
1. Her favorite thing about her job is riding in patient's beds and wagons (Being treated like ROYALTY :) )
2. She is a very goofy girl who can also fall asleep ANYWHERE! (Loves a warm blanket)
3. She loves treats and her coworkers who treat her like family
4. Peppermint is obsessed with the crushed ice at the hospital and will request for it in her water bowl everyday
