Canine Copilot Program
Canine Copilot Program:
Dayton Children's has more than 3,200 employees who come to work everyday to make a difference in the lives of the patients and their families. There are two employees that are unlike the rest...they have fur and four paws! Millie and Peppermint are the hospital's facility dogs who work alongside the Child Life team to provide individualized interventions to best met a child's needs. Whether it's lending a paw during a tough procedure, addressing pain without the use of medication, or being present to help lower anxiety in an unfamiliar environment, the facility dogs and their handlers partner together to ensure the patient and family feel comfortable and supported during their visit.
About Peppermint:
Peppermint works alongside, Kara Lucas, who is a certified Child Life Specialist. Together they cover various outpatient areas including medical imaging, care house, and the Emergency Department. Additionally, Kara and Peppermint lead interventions on the Behavioral Health Unit. Peppermint is utilized as an additional tool to encourage patients to be brave for various procedures including MRI, CT, IV, blood draws, and much more!
Fun Facts about Peppermint:
1. She can nap just about anywhere!
2. Her favorite treat is anything with pumpkin. Yum!
3. She loves to ride in the hospital bed with patients!
