Activity therapy is a powerful tool for helping kids learn healthy ways to deal with stress and cope with trauma. This Giving Tuesday, I'm working to help the Dayton Children's Activity Therapy team by raising money for all of the supplies they need to help kids who need care from our behavioral health unit.
With kids ranging in age from 9 to 17 and a variety of mental health concerns, therapists assess each patient to determine their specific needs and offer them choices for therapy programs. Activity therapy is all about choice: They teach kids that movement is a healthy way to regain a sense of control. You can choose your movements; you can even choose how you breathe.
Yoga, music, art, game play, team building, cooking, and opther options are guided by experiential learning — “learning by doing” — a unique approach not available at other pediatric behavioral health centers in the region.
Every child in the 24-bed unit participates in activity therapy with the goal of going home with long-term coping skills. Thanks to our behavioral health team and your caring contributions, kids who come to Dayton Children’s in crisis are leaving with a toolkit to thrive.
