Let's Support Babies Receiving Breast Milk!
Happy Giving Tuesday!
Thank you for visiting our page!
We are the small but mighty Lactation Team for Dayton Children’s Hospital. We partner with the Clinical Nutrition Team to provide amazing care for our tiny humans receiving breast milk. We have been so fortunate to support families; this is our first full year being part of the Dayton Children's team. We have done truly incredible things in such a short time. Please take a moment to read about our accomplishments thus far and some goals we have for 2023! Thank you again for supporting Dayton Children's and the families we care for.
In 2022, we enhanced lactation support throughout the NICU and expanded support to all inpatient floors. Bottom line: if a baby is receiving breast milk, we’re there! In 2021, 20% of non-NICU infants received breastfeeding support. In 2022, 62% on non-NICU infants received support. We also opened our outpatient lactation clinic in the Dayton Children's Health Pavilion, conveniently located right down the street from the main hospital. Our open and airy space offers families a quiet corner to receive breastfeeding counseling, monitor infant growth, and have a safe space to share in the journey of parenthood. Part of this expansion has allowed us to provide lactation support for Dayton Children's Pediatrics. Our lactation specialists visit with a newborn at their first appointment and follow them throughout their feeding journey. We have seen so many positive outcomes by offering lactation services. Our babies receive the absolute best food nature can provide while parents experience our care team's dedicated support.
Not only have we been supporting families in the Dayton area, we have increased our support for Dayton Childrens employees! Any employee wishing to provide breast milk has free access to our outpatient lactation clinic as well as receives a breast pump kit which allows them to use a provided hospital grade breast pump at work. Each floor in the newly renovated tower has a private lactation room with a pump allowing a seamless transition from work flow to pumping breatmilk using the provided kit. As the main campus of Dayton Childrens expands; we will continue to provide more space for employees to express breast milk in a clean and quiet space. We have recieved such positive praise for our employee support, we have been awarded Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite Platinum status for both 2021 and 2022. We hope to continue the trend for many years to come.
Part of our job is to assess whether or not a family is in need of breastfeeding resources or supplies. We will provide breast pumps, breastfeeding apparel, and other feeding accessories at no charge. This is such a blessing to our families; many of them are on tight budgets because of their parental leave. We strive to continue offering no charge supplies in 2023 -- your donation makes this possible! Our goals also include supporting families outside of Dayton Childrens walls. We want to grow our community involvement as well. In 2022 we were able to attend Mamas at the market ( Gem city Market), the Black Breasteeding week luncheon at Sinclair Community College as well as we started our partnership with Moms2B at The Hope Center. In 2023, we want to continue our growth with the mentioned groups as well as grow our relationship with WIC, local primary care offices and provide in person prenatal nutrition classes. Having better breastfeeding outcomes starts with having a well informed parent.
Having a baby and trying to breastfeed is a vulnerable time in a parent's life. Our team's goal is to support the parents' feeding plan and help them feel happy with their choice. We want healthy, happy babies and healthy, happy parents!
